Facing Your Goliath—And Finding the Champion Within

Facing Your Goliath—And Finding the Champion Within

We all have our Goliaths, those giants that seem too intimidating to face. For some, it may be a diagnosis. For others, a voice of self-doubt that whispers you’re not enough. For me, Goliath came early.

I was born with facial paralysis. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes before I could even walk. I lost my eyesight nine months after giving birth to my daughter. And just a few years later, I became bedbound. These were not just physical challenges, they were loud, persistent voices telling me I was defeated. But like David, I chose not to listen to those voices. I chose to see the champion in me.

Before David ever picked up a stone, he had to face fear, doubt, and criticism. His own brother questioned his motives (1 Samuel 17:28), King Saul told him he wasn’t capable (1 Samuel 17:33), and Goliath mocked him (1 Samuel 17:43). Sound familiar?

Our Goliaths often look like:

  • The voice that says, “You’re not ready.”
  • The medical report that screams, “This will break you.”
  • The inner critic that whispers, “You’re not worthy.”

David’s victory wasn’t in the stone, it was in the mindset. He declared with bold faith:

“The battle is the Lord’s.” (1 Samuel 17:47)

The Torah reminds us in Deuteronomy 31:6:

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified… for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

And the New Testament echoes that courage:

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

This isn’t just ancient wisdom. It’s spiritual coaching for your soul.

There were moments when I wanted to give up—when the blindness, the loneliness, and the stillness of being bedbound felt like Goliath taunting me in the valley. But I had to renew my mind daily (Romans 12:2) and remember: God doesn’t call the qualified; He qualifies the called.

I began to speak differently to myself.

I stopped seeing myself as broken and started seeing myself as chosen.

I stopped focusing on the giant and started focusing on the God who is bigger than any giant.

How to Face Your Goliath: A Process of Victory

  1. Identify the giant. What’s standing in your way? Call it out by name.
  2. Recognize the internal and external voices. Whose voice are you listening to?
  3. Renew your mind with truth. Use the Word of God to replace the lies.
  4. Take your stone. What small but powerful action can you take today?
  5. Run toward the battle. Like David, don’t wait. Face it head-on.

You have a champion within you. It’s time to awaken it.

You are not your diagnosis. You are not your past. You are not your fear.

You are who God says you are—strong, courageous, and victorious.
