Created from the Invisible: Understanding the Image and Likeness of God
(Genesis 1:26)
“Then God said, ‘Let Us make mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness…’”
Genesis 1:26 does not begin with the physical body—it begins with being.
Before form, before breath, before flesh, humanity was conceived in the realm of the invisible. To be created in the image and likeness of God does not mean we resemble God physically, for God is Spirit. Rather, it reveals that our origin is spiritual, and our physical existence is an expression of something far deeper and eternal.
The Image of God
The image of God speaks to essence. It is the divine imprint placed within every human being—the inner spark of awareness, consciousness, creativity, wisdom, and the capacity to perceive truth. This image is not something we earn, lose, or grow into. It is given at creation.
This means that before we identify as male or female, successful or broken, able or disabled, seen or unseen—we already are. The image of God within us confirms that our worth does not come from what we do, but from who we are at the core.
The Likeness of God
Likeness speaks to expression. While the image is what we carry, the likeness is how we live. To grow into God’s likeness is to align our thoughts, intentions, and actions with divine qualities—love, compassion, justice, wisdom, creativity, and life-giving presence.
Because God is Spirit, likeness is not about appearance but about state of being. As we become more conscious of who we truly are, our lives begin to reflect the divine nature already planted within us.
Spiritual First, Physical Second
Genesis does not describe humans as bodies that later receive spirit. It reveals humans as spiritual beings who later take form. The physical body becomes a vessel—an instrument through which the invisible essence is expressed in the visible world.
When this truth is forgotten, identity becomes fragile and dependent on external validation. But when this truth is remembered, life becomes grounded, purposeful, and anchored beyond circumstance.
A Living Reminder
To be created in God’s image and likeness means:
- You are not accidental.
- You are not merely physical.
- You are not defined by limitation.
You are a living reflection of the unseen—carrying eternity within time, spirit within matter, and divine purpose within human experience.
